Sports Massage Therapy
As a Level 4 Sports Massage Therapist, I’m qualified to work with complex soft-tissue dysfunction.
I combine advanced techniques with a deep understanding of functional movement to help athletes reduce pain, improve mobility and recover with confidence.
Effective recovery supports better movement, performance and longevity.
Sports massage is one of the most effective ways to support an athlete’s body through training, recovery and performance. I offer sports massage for runners, endurance athletes and active individuals looking to move better, recover faster and train more consistently.
Sports massage works deep into the muscles and connective tissues to improve how the body functions as a whole. For athletes, repetitive movement can lead to tightness, imbalances and fatigue. Targeted sports massage helps address these issues directly, improving circulation, releasing tension, supporting mobility and reducing the risk of injury.
Benefits of Sports Massage for Athletes
Sports massage helps support the body through the demands of training, recovery and performance.
Recovery and performance
Sports massage helps reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and support faster recovery after training. Many athletes find it helps ease post-exercise soreness and keeps their body ready for the next session.
Mobility and movement
By releasing soft-tissue restrictions, sports massage can improve joint mobility and movement efficiency. Athletes often notice they feel lighter, looser and more balanced afterwards.
Injury prevention
Regular treatment helps identify tight or overworked areas early, address imbalances and reduce compensatory movement patterns. This supports long-term tissue health and helps minimise training setbacks.
Whether you’re building mileage, preparing for an event or recovering from injury, sports massage can support your performance at every stage.
Techniques used in sports massage
Each session is tailored to the needs of the athlete. Depending on your goals and how your body is presenting on the day, treatment may include a combination of techniques such as:
Deep tissue massage to reduce muscular tension
Trigger point therapy to release tight or sensitive areas
Muscle Energy Techniques (METs) to improve flexibility and restore muscle balance
Soft tissue release and passive stretching to support mobility and range of motion
The aim is always to help your body move more freely, recover well and support consistent training.
What to Expect From Your Sports Massage Session
Each session is tailored to you, your training and how your body is feeling on the day.
1. Initial conversation and assessment
We’ll start with a short conversation about your training, any pain or tightness you’re experiencing, and your goals for the session. I may also look at how certain areas move to understand what’s happening in the body.
2. Treatment
The massage itself is adapted to your needs. This may include deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, stretching or mobility techniques to release tension and improve movement.
Sports massage can sometimes feel intense in certain areas, but it should always feel controlled and purposeful. Pressure is adjusted throughout the session to make sure it stays effective and comfortable.
3. After the session
After treatment, many athletes feel looser and more mobile. I may also suggest simple mobility or recovery strategies to help maintain the benefits between sessions and support your training.
Sports Massage and Injury
Sports massage can be helpful for injury prevention and for supporting recovery from certain soft-tissue injuries. Many athletes come for treatment when they notice pain, tightness or restricted movement that is affecting their training.
If you are currently injured, the session will begin with a short assessment to understand what is happening in the body and how the injury is responding to movement. Treatment is then adapted accordingly. In some cases this may include working on surrounding muscles to reduce compensation and improve mobility while the injured area recovers.
There are certain situations where massage needs to be modified or postponed. For example, deep sports massage is usually not appropriate within the first 48 hours of an acute injury, when the body is still in the early inflammatory phase.
If you are unsure whether sports massage is suitable for your injury, you are always welcome to get in touch before booking. Sessions are tailored carefully to support safe recovery and long-term movement health.
